Bovine Mastitis
This inflammation of the mammary gland in dairy cows is a major problem for the UK dairy industry. APP tests can detect the condition as there are higher levels of Haptoglobin, SAA and AGP in the serum and Hp and SAA in the milk of infected compared to healthy cows.
Infection in Cattle
APP responses have been used in studies of infection with live and killed Pasteurella multocida showing an increased APP response after challenge and in an experimental model of infection with bovine respiratory syncytial virus where the magnitude and duration of the APP response correlated well with the severity of clinical symptoms.
Infection in Pigs
The pig acute phase response to infection with Streptococcus suis has been studied and showed that a combined measurement of two or three APPs can give the highest sensitivity for detection of an ongoing infection.
